A wide range of data is available to support transportation planners, including the base transportation network, population and employment projections, transit ridership, traffic counts, trip making surveys, socioeconomic conditions, and emerging cellular applications. However, to be meaningful to decision makers and the broader community, transportation data needs to be transformed into a relatable but compelling narrative.

Data visualization, geospatial analysis, and cartography are the fundamental building blocks of quantitative transit planning at Metrolinx. Examples from recent Metrolinx work, including the 2041 Regional Transportation Plan (RTP), will be used to highlight the importance and power of visualization and mapping. Existing data sources in the GTHA and opportunities for further regional data collaboration will also be explored.
